Come be a part of your child’s education at John Muir School by volunteering! There are many ways to support our students, both on campus and from home.

If you plan to volunteer on campus, assist in classrooms or at lunch, attend field trips, or participate in other school activities, you must be an approved SBPSD volunteer.

How to Become an Approved Volunteer

To become an approved volunteer, you will need to complete the following:

  1. Complete the volunteer paperwork and return it to the John Muir school office. If you have previously been approved to volunteer, you do not need to complete the paperwork again.

  2. Complete TB clearance. Volunteers must provide either a negative TB test or a physician-completed TB Risk Assessment Form. TB clearance must be updated every four years.

  3. Complete fingerprinting. Once your fingerprints have been cleared, you do not need to complete fingerprinting again to volunteer with SBPSD until your child leaves the district.

  4. Complete Mandated Reporter Training. California requires volunteers to complete Mandated Reporter Training. After completing the training, submit your certificate of completion to John Muir School.

  5. Attend one SBPSD Volunteer Training session each school year. Annual volunteer training is required for all volunteers.

Important: Volunteers must complete both the required Mandated Reporter Training and the annual SBPSD Volunteer Training to remain eligible to volunteer.

Ways You Can Volunteer

There are many ways to support John Muir students and staff:

  1. Help with small-group or one-on-one instruction in the classroom

  2. Assist with lunch yard duty

  3. Help with weekly classroom preparation

  4. Complete classroom preparation or other projects from home

  5. Serve as a before- or after-school crossing guard

  6. Assist with the school garden

  7. Drive students on field trips, if approved

  8. Chaperone field trips

  9. Lead a special class activity or project

  10. Join the PTA and help with or lead events such as the Ice Cream Social, Pancake Breakfast, Talent Show, Beautification Work Days, Field Day/School Picnic, or a new activity of your own
